SCHOTT CERAN®, the glass-ceramic cooktop specialist brand from SCHOTT, has continuously revolutionized cooking for 50 years. Modern kitchens have been befitted with cooktops that are both high-tech and a design element, so much so that black glass-ceramic has become the standard for induction and electric cooking. In its anniversary years, the engineers have developed the SCHOTT CERAN Luminoir™ that integrates smarter, brighter lighting possibilities.

The story of SCHOTT CERAN® starts in outer space 50 years ago in 1971. Its original black glass-ceramic material was innovated to protect spaceships from heat when re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere. The qualities were then enhanced for cooking, hence the brand name has been commonplace in modern kitchens globally since. In 2021, the CERAN EXCITE® lighting portfolio debuted the new hero product SCHOTT CERAN Luminoir™ and turns cooking even more smart. It received the renowned iF Design Award 2022 in the ‘kitchen’ category. This follows the CERAN EXCITE® light portfolio’s iF Gold Award in 2019.

SCHOTT CERAN Luminoir™ reveals a glass-ceramic that brings bright, clear and true-color lighting solutions to cooktops. Using a new formula, the German brand’s engineers have developed a material that is both more translucent yet deep black. Its elegant dark color is a statement piece in the kitchen interior at any time of the day. The appearance’s translucency also enables virtually endless possibilities when it comes to lighting.

The new material’s translucency allows white and blue light, particularly, to shine through brighter and clear. These are emitted by LEDs placed below the panel. Other color combinations can also penetrate the glass-ceramic: red has predominately been used in cooking zones, but white is set to play a greater role in kitchen communication in the future.

‘Unlike previous glass-ceramics, which have a high light transmission especially in the high, red range of visible light, CERAN Luminoir™ has a uniform high transmission over the entire range of visible light. That means the material acts like an optical gray filter,’ explains Dr. Jörn Besinger, Head of Product Management & New Business Development at SCHOTT CERAN®.

As if a smartphone screen, the added lighting features turn the high-performance cooktops into more accessible, intuitive and also dynamic surfaces. The lighting solutions ensure that controls, cooking zones and even other digital features are visible when switched. It adds visual support to exchange information and even connect with other smart kitchen devices. As such, the new design looks to offer the next cooking revolution from SCHOTT CERAN®.
